Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
