Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators
The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

The incident follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its recent championship drought.
